| Contemporary's GED Interactive Frequently Asked Questions |
||
| 1. | Question: | Are passwords in MHC GED Interactive eight or nine characters? Can I use both letters and numbers in the passwords? |
| Answer: | In MHC GED Interactive, passwords are a combination of nine number and/or letter characters. | |
| 2. | Question: | What do I do if I forget my password or if I do not know the administrative password? |
| Answer: | Contact McGraw-Hill/Contemporary technical support at 1-800-890-6511 or via the online tech-support web form. | |
| 3. | Question: | I have Contemporary's GED Interactive and have been using it for years. Can I keep the records from this program for MHC GED Interactive? |
| Answer: | No, MHC GED Interactive is a totally new program. It has completely new content, which corresponds to the new standards of the GED test. Additionally, record keeping is handled much differently in this program than it was in the Contemporary GED Interactive program. For both of these reasons, you must set up your students and teachers again, and students must progress through the new program from the beginning. | |
| 4. | Question: | Do I have to set up teachers, classes, and students again if I already have them set up in other Contemporary software products? |
| Answer: | Unfortunately, yes, for now, you do. In future products, we hope to have a system in place that will allow you to import and export basic information, so that once you set up teachers, classes, and students in one program, you will be able to use the same information in all new McGraw-Hill/Contemporary software products. | |
| 5. | Question: | Does MHC GED Interactive still have floppy and CD modes as your previous products did, so that I can minimize the amount of computer space needed to run the program? I don't have a server nor do I have a lot of space on my standalone computers, and I want to students to be able to keep records private. |
| Answer: | Yes, McGraw-Hill/Contemporary understand the various needs of our users and, as our customers have requested, MHC GED Interactive does have floppy and CD modes. | |
| 6. | Question: | If need be, does this program allow me to move a student from one class to another class? |
| Answer: | Yes, as long as you follow the guidelines specified in question number 12, you should have no difficulty moving a student from one class to another class. | |
| 7. | Question: | Suppose for some reason I need to uninstall and reinstall MHC GED Interactive. Can I save student records if I need to reinstall the program or are the student records lost during the uninstall process? |
| Answer: | Provided you have MHC GED Interactive v. 1.5 (and not the prerelease versions 1.1 or 1.1a), the uninstall will not delete the GEDData records folder, so you should still have the records after uninstalling the program. To be safe, however, backup the GEDData folder onto your desktop before you run Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel. | |
| 8. | Question: | Will MHC GED Interactive work on a Macintosh computer? |
| Answer: | No, sorry, MHC GED Interactive is not Mac compatible. | |
| 9. | Question: | Does MHC GED Interactive run on Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP servers and systems? |
| Answer: | Yes, MHC GED Interactive runs on any Windows-based system or server, except for Windows 3.1 or below and Windows NT 4, Service Pack 5 or below. | |
| 10. | Question: | How do I create a shortcut on my desktop when I have installed MHC GED Interactive to a server? |
| Answer: | Go to the server drive. Locate where you have installed the program. Find and double-click on the file called "Client Setup.exe" (or simply "Client Setup," if file extensions are hidden). Run through the install. When it has finished, you should see a shortcut on your desktop and a link to the program in your Start Menu. | |
| 11. | Question: | What rights and permissions must student have to use MHC GED Interactive? |
| Answer: | At least to the GEDData folder and its subfolders, student must have FULL CONTROL. You may restrict access to read and execute on higher-level folders, but make sure you do not inherit those rights to the subfolders without going back to make sure that the GEDData folder has full permissions. See MHC GED Interactive tech support issue number 2, "stuck in tutorial," for more information on rights and permissions. | |
| 12. | Question: | I have the program installed on one drive and want to reinstall it to a different drive without losing the students' records. Is that possible? Can I move records from a network drive to a local hard drive or from a local hard drive to the network? |
| Answer: | Yes, you can. To do so, follow these steps. You will have to go through this process once for each teacher with student records on the system on which the program is currently installed.

| 13. | Question: | What do I do if I cannot hear sound when I run the program? |
| Answer: | Go to the Control Panel and check your sound settings. If muted is checked anywhere, uncheck it, or, if the volume is low in any category, raise it. | |
| 14. | Question: | Does my system have to support long file names if I want to run this program? |
| Answer: | Yes, some of the files of this program have longer than eight characters. If you have a server that does not support long file names, you will not be able to run MHC GED Interactive without first removing the short file name requirement. | |
