Glencoe's new collection of ethnic anthologies gives students access to a wealth of literature written by some of the best classic authors and the finest contemporary voices. Each anthology, organized thematically into five relevant themes, combines literature and art as powerful expressions of the group's cultural story. Authors featured in African American Literature include Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Martin Luther King Jr., W.E.B. DuBois, Zora Neale Hurston, Maya Angelou, Malcolm X, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Alice Walker, and James Baldwin.
Glencoe's Ethnic Anthologies are designed to give students access to a wide selection of the best literature in America written by authors with ties to these ethnic groups. Short stories, short nonfiction selections, one-act plays, and a wide variety of poetry, written by the best classic authors and the finest contemporary voices, were chosen to provide engaging and inspiring reading experiences leading to relevant classroom discussion.
Each anthology is organized thematically into five themes, each introduced by works of fine art created by artists from that culture. The themes are organized under such topics as origins, family, struggles, and influences.
Each literature selection begins with a photograph and biography of the author, as well as any background information that will help illuminate the selection. The selection is followed by questions and activities designed to encourage reflection and discussion.
