How do I manage a grant?

grc logo

Effective grant management can be just as critical to a technology project’s success as skillful proposal writing. When managing grant money, ask yourself:

  • Has the funding agency’s money been spent correctly?

  • Are teachers implementing the acquired technology?

  • How has implementation affected student motivation, work,
    and test scores?

Managing Grant Funds

Prior to writing a proposal, assess whether your organization is prepared to implement and monitor the funds it may receive. Mismanaging a grant can have serious consequences, including having to return funds, damaging your reputation, and jeopardizing eligibility for future funding. General tasks involved in managing a funded project include the following:

  • Inspiring and sustaining the participants’ interest and excitement

  • Checking regularly that the project is meeting stated goals and objectives

  • Adjusting the project’s implementation along the way, as needed

  • Evaluating the project carefully, collecting information about instructional practices and student outcomes

  • Reporting progress to stakeholders

  • Validating that grant money is being used for allowable expenses

  • Facilitating visits from auditors and administrators
