About Jamestown Education
Jamestown Publishers was founded in Providence, Rhode Island
by Kathy and Ted Spargo, and published its first set of texts—a
developmental reading series for community college students—in
the spring of 1970. Since its inception, the company has been
guided by its mission of providing high-quality instructional
products to help all readers become better readers.
Jamestown Publishers quickly developed a strong reputation
for producing effective, motivating, easy-to-use reading programs
and became known as “The Reading People” in educational circles.
For some time, the company offered programs at levels ranging
from kindergarten to college, but found its niche developing
texts for adolescent and adult learners.
Jamestown programs share a common theme in that they motivate
and compel students to use reading to gain knowledge – the
ultimate goal of any literacy program. In addition, the
programs focus on vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension instruction,
designed explicitly for older readers, to improve proficiency
and results on standardized tests.
Jamestown Publishers was eventually acquired by NTC/Contemporary
Publishers, and later found its current home with McGraw-Hill/Glencoe
in the year 2000. Jamestown Publishers is now known as Jamestown
Education.
Jamestown Education continues to expand its reputation as
a leader in providing high-quality reading programs by utilizing
the most recent advances in web-based technology, expanding
into new genres, and developing innovative texts. In the future,
Jamestown Education will continue to lead the way in developing
materials that are appropriate for both the reading levels
and age levels of adolescent and adult learners and achieve
outstanding reading results.
