Jamestown Reading Navigator™ is an online
reading intervention program based on the latest research in adolescent literacy.
The program allows each student to work at his or her own pace at the appropriate
reading level, and provides an individualized learning experience for each
student.
The online component of Jamestown Reading Navigator improves students’ comprehension,
vocabulary, and fluency by providing direct, explicit instruction, modeling,
practice, immediate feedback, and reteaching (if necessary). Students practice
and apply reading strategies and skills by reading highly engaging content,
viewing interactive multimedia, and writing in response to reading. Phonics,
decoding, and sight words instruction are provided for those in need of basic
reading skills.
Teachers and Administrators monitor student progress utilizing
a robust online Learner Management System in which all activities and scores
from formative and summative assessments are recorded. Using the online performance
data to inform instruction, teachers are able to focus their whole and small
group instruction and reteaching on the skills that require the most attention.
Teacher lesson plans and student print resources such as inTIME magazines
and inClass Reader anthologies with audio libraries are provided for offline
instruction and reteaching.
This unique combination of individualized online learning and focused teacher
instruction increases student achievement. A recent study by the National
Dropout Prevention Center at Clemson University showed that students using
Jamestown Reading Navigator demonstrated statistically significant improvement
in their reading skills. Treatment subjects made a half grade level of progress
in comprehension and vocabulary in only seven weeks of instruction.
