TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY LISTS McGRAW-HILL EDUCATION
PROGRAMS FOR COMPLETE READING INTERVENTION SOLUTION
Integrated print and digital programs meet the needs of struggling
Texas readers
NEW YORK (July 22, 2008) - The Texas Education
Agency has recently approved McGraw-Hill Education's reading
intervention programs for the state's Intensive Reading Initiative
for struggling readers in Grades 4-8. The McGraw-Hill Education
curricula selected are Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's Reading
Triumphs and SRA/McGraw-Hill's Corrective
Reading for
students in Grades 4-8, as well as Glencoe/McGraw-Hill's Jamestown
Reading Navigator for students in Grades 6-8. These selections
represent a comprehensive print and digital solution for students
reading below their grade level.
Through special funding, the Texas Intensive Reading Instruction
(IRI) Program will make available to qualifying districts and
charter schools a list of selected intensive reading instruction
programs appropriate for Grades 4-8 for the 2008-2009 school
year.
"We are pleased that our programs have been approved
by the state for this initiative. These high-quality curricula
use sound instructional philosophies that have been proven
to work with struggling readers," said Steve McClung,
president of McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group, which includes
Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe/McGraw-Hill.
"These programs not only provide teachers the tools to
teach students to read, they help students learn to enjoy reading.
All of the materials are sensitive to students' age and interest
levels. The content and design of the materials help engage
and motivate struggling readers," said Dan Caton, president
of SRA/McGraw-Hill. "Most importantly, they build students'
confidence by giving them the skills they need to succeed."
Reading Triumphs is a research-based
intervention program designed for elementary students reading
two or more years below grade level. The program provides explicit
instruction for tested skills to ensure reading mastery. And
because struggling readers face different challenges and gaps
in knowledge, Reading
Triumphs offers targeted resources so teachers have
what they need when they need it. CD-ROM based activities provide
systematic awareness and phonics skills at a variety of levels
to differentiate instruction.
SRA/McGraw-Hill's Corrective Reading provides intensive
Direct Instruction-based reading intervention for students
who are reading below grade level. This Direct Instruction
reading intervention program delivers tightly sequenced, carefully
planned lessons that give struggling students the structure
and practice necessary to become skilled, fluent readers and
better learners. Four levels for decoding plus four for comprehension
address the varied reading deficits and skill levels found
among older students.
Using the latest research in adolescent literacy, Jamestown
Reading Navigator is the first online-based reading
intervention curriculum with explicit skill instruction for
adolescent students reading two or more years below grade
level. The flexibility of the online program enables students
to experience success at their own pace and access lessons
that are appropriate to their skill level. Interactive activities
and multimedia throughout the program engage and motivate
students. Accompanying print materials, including exclusive
reading selections from TIME magazine, integrate high-interest
content and leveled selections that are thematically connected
to the online program.
Teachers find that Reading Triumphs, Corrective
Reading and Jamestown Reading
Navigator all offer extensive
assessment capabilities critical to informing instruction,
and flexible tools targeted to individual student needs.
Progress monitoring throughout the programs ensures that
struggling students receive the necessary instruction to
move to on-level performance.
