I use Jamestown materials all the time! My students love the Critical Reading and Wild Side series. The stories are interesting and cover such a variety of topics that I can always find one to complement whatever topic we are studying, when I’m not using them by themselves. Since the stories are all nonfiction, my administrators have no problem buying them for our department. Our state test, the FCAT, is mostly nonfiction, and our administrators really emphasize getting more nonfiction into the classroom. Jamestown books are a fabulous way to do that!

The Wild Side™

Reading Levels 4-6, Interest Levels 6-12

Energize low-level readers with amazing, true stories at accessible reading levels

  • Prepare students for state and national tests using critical-thinking questions
  • Motivate students with high-interest selections at a mid-level readability
  • Improve proficiency in reading nonfiction

The Wild Side, a perennial favorite among struggling readers, mesmerizes with astonishing tales of true-life adventures.  One appreciative teacher notes; “I have difficulty removing the books from my students’ hands at the end of the period!” The Wild Side follows the same format as The Outer Edge and Critical Reading, and supports students at 4th-6th grade reading levels.  Comprehension questions reinforce literal understanding, while critical-thinking questions encourage students to consider the author’s purpose, make inferences, identify cause and effect, and make predictions. With all the excitement, students won’t realize that the series prepares them for success on standardized tests!

Suspenseful, tantalizing, and courageous nonfiction

  • “The Tragic Donner Party”
  • “The Spy Who Saved Lincoln”
  • “Near Death on the Football Field”
  • “Mysterious Circles”
  • “The Night the Dam Let Go”
  • “Bungee Jumping”
  • “Lizzie Borden”
  • “Typhoid Mary”
    . . . and many more!
