Performance assessment is a means of evaluating a wide range of student abilities, including communication skills, critical thinking skills, and approaches to problem solving. This week’s Teaching Tips give you guidelines for using performance assessments in your courses.

Using Performance Assessment (Monday)
Performance assessment can be used successfully in a variety of courses. Any activity that requires students to apply problem-solving skills can be used as a performance test. Performance assessments involve more than recall, so different students may have different answers, with both answers being correct. Use performance assessment activities with single students independently, with partners, or with cooperative learning groups or teams.

Activities for Performance Assessment (Tuesday)
Activities that can be used for performance assessment are as varied as are college courses. Students may choose their own activities, or you may choose to assign them. Students can do any of the following: Write an essay. Give a dramatic presentation. Make an oral presentation. Draw and present a poster or chart. Lead a class discussion. Prepare a slide show, video, or multimedia presentation. Give a musical performance.

Formats for Performance Assessment (Wednesday)
Formats that can be used for performance assessment activities are as varied as are college courses. Students may choose their own formats or you may choose to assign one. Students can use any of the following: demonstration, presentation, performance, production work, or observation

Evaluating Performance Assessment (Thursday)
With performance assessment, both the process and the product must be evaluated. Performance assessment activities can be difficult and time consuming to assess and must be looked at on an individual student or individual group basis. See this week’s Download Depot for a handy reference for students to fill out before their performance. Evaluate both the pros and cons of performance assessment. Pros: job related, relatively easy to administer, in-depth assessment, applies to real-life situations. Cons: hard to equate, subjective scoring, and time consuming to evaluate.

Performance Records Assessment (Friday)
Performance records assessment includes references and performance rating forms from employers or other instructors. Performance records are efficient, low cost, and easy to administer. However, they have low reliability, are subjectively written by someone, are hard to equate, and may be rated differently by different instructors. Use performance records assessment in conjunction with other assessment tools.
