This Week's Topic Course Administration and Organization Tools Take advantage of the various technology tools and resources available to you as an instructor. These tools will provide more learning opportunities to your students, save time, and help you communicate with your students. This Week's Tips School Web Pages (Monday) Your school may automatically set up Web pages associated with you (faculty), your department, and your course. Ask technology services the following questions regarding these pages: What Web pages are automatically created? When are these created? Which of these can I update or change? What are the processes for changing these Web pages?
Courseware (Tuesday) Many schools provide courseware software that allows you to publish your course content on the Web. Courseware software provides many tools for you and your students, as well as a conduit for publishing your course. Here are a few tips to remember: Find out if your textbook publisher provides courseware for your book (e.g., Introduction to Microeconomics for WebCT). Take a training class in your school’s courseware. Learn about the software before putting together your course materials. Web-based Calendars (Wednesday) Web-based calendars provide a central location for updating your course schedule for your students. Web sites such as yahoo.com, excite.com, and calendars.net typically offer free Web calendars. The advantages of a Web calendar include: Easily update and distribute information (compared to a changing a syllabus). Post test, quiz, and field trip reminders. Cross-link your Web calendar and course Web page. Automatically e-mail students with schedule changes. Online Tests or Quizzes (Thursday) Online quizzes give your students another opportunity to test their comprehension. Online quizzes are accessible through teaching, textbook publisher, and topical Web sites (e.g., math, geology, etc.). Evaluate online quiz resources for: Ability to e-mail a student’s results to you and the student. In-depth feedback to students about incorrect answers. Online quiz performance with slow Internet access (i.e., dial up). Availability of quizzes throughout your course.
Electronic Test Banks (Friday) When using electronic test banks, learn the basic features of the testing software before producing a test or quiz. Electronic test banks are useful when creating a test that contains mostly multiple choice, true or false, and short answer questions. When reviewing the software, learn how to: Install a test bank file. Select and remove questions from the test. Print the test or export it in the desired file format. Produce the grading key. |
