In this chapter you learned that Persians spread the idea of using coins for money. You may think that relics from Persia are rare, but you can buy their coins, and study them, on the Web. By studying these ancient coins, we can learn about Persian culture. In this activity you will take a closer look at the history and design of Persian coins.

  • Examine the Persian coins illustrated.
  • Apply what you learn to answer the following questions.



1.  What did Persian monarchs’ and rulers’ striking of coins represent?


2.  Who instituted the first distinctively Persian coins? Describe the coins.


3.  How did later kings change the look of the coins?


4.  Why did you think Persian coins ceased to exist by the end of the 4th century B.C.?


5.  Persian coins depicted their kings as strong leaders so that their power would not be questioned. What do you think our coins will say to future generations? Write a one-page essay stating what you think our penny, dime, and quarter will convey to people 2500 years from now.
