Introduction
In the 19th century Russian painting began to develop a unique character distinct from the influences of Western Europe. The themes expressed by Russian painters reflected their country's landscape, history, culture, and way of life. Russian artists also sought to make art available to a broader audience, not just to the wealthy. In this activity you will learn more about this pivotal period in the history of Russian art.

Take notes as you explore the site, and then answer the following questions.

1. What was Karl Briullov's role in the development of romanticism in Russian painting? What is Briullov's most famous work, and what elements of romanticism does it exhibit?

2. The ideological realism movement developed following what significant political and historical event in Russia? What did painters of this movement feel was art's proper function in Russian society?

3. The Slavic (or Russian) Revival movement was an outgrowth of what larger conflict of opinion in Russian society? What policies and ideas did this movement reject? What historic Russian leader originated the policies and ideas rejected by the movement?

4. What events led to the formation of the Association of Free Artists? What did the artists sacrifice when they formed an independent organization?

5. Create a poster promoting an exhibition of 19th century Russian art. Focus on one of the three main trends of that period. Include historical information that illustrates the relationship of the chosen style to the cultural influences of the time and place, and biographical information on some of its major proponents.
