Introduction
In this chapter you have studied the countries of North Africa. The country of Egypt has a civilization that dates back almost 5,000 years. The Egyptian people, who made their home beside the Nile River, built incredible tombs and monuments, developed a complex writing system, and established a powerful government structure.

Directions
Start at the Ancient Egypt Web site.

Click on Egyptian Life in the menu on the left of the screen. Click on and read the Story about the daily life of two Egyptian families.
Return to the main screen. Click on Mummification. Read to the end of the page, and then click on Story. Follow the links titled Embalming and Wrapping to find out how a mummy was made.
Use what you have learned to answer the following questions.

1. Name three differences between the lives of the noble family and the farm family in ancient Egypt.

2. What similarities were there in the daily lives of the two families?

3. How did the earliest ancient Egyptians create "mummies"?

4. What was the natron used by the Egyptians in the mummifying process?

5. Explore some of the other links on the site, such as Gods and Goddesses, Temples, and Writing. Using information from the Web site, create a 5-question multiple choice quiz. Don't forget to make an answer key, too. Trade quizzes with a classmate to see how much you have learned about ancient Egypt.
