Introduction
In this chapter you learned about the early civilizations that flourished in North Africa and Southwest Asia. One of these groups, the Phoenicians, lived in the region called Mesopotamia along the Mediterranean coast of Southwest Asia. They developed an advanced and wide-reaching culture. In this activity, you will learn more about the Phoenicians and their contributions to the ancient world.

Start at the Ancient Civilizations Web site.

  • Click on the Middle East box at the bottom of the screen.
  • Scroll down and click on the Phoenicians box on the left of the screen.
  • Read the information about the Phoenicians and answer the following questions.


1.  Along what body of water was Phoenicia located?


2.  Summarize the Phoenician contributions to manufacturing.


3.  How were the Phoenicians "missionaries" of civilization?


4.  What does our present-day alphabet have to do with the Phoenicians?


5.  Use the Internet to find out more about one of Phoenicia's important cities, such as Tyre or Byblos. Create a travel brochure showing what an ancient tourist to the city would have found there. Use pictures or drawings to make your brochure more interesting.
