Introduction
In this chapter, you have read about the world’s second-largest country, Canada. In the province of Quebec, the influence of the original French settlers is still present. French is the predominant language and French customs are still practiced. Feelings are so strong that many Quebecois would like to establish their own independent nation.

Directions
Once on the site:

  • Under Collections, click on Youth Encyclopedia
  • Under the Subject Index, click on Provinces & Territories
  • Either type the word Quebec in the Search Box or scroll down through the list of territories and provinces until you come to Quebec. Then click.
  • After reading the opening page, go to Article Contents on the left hand side of the page and click on Government and Politics and read that material.

Apply what you have learned to answer the following questions:

1.  Who founded Quebec and when?


2.  What makes the province of Quebec unique?


3.  What was the “Quiet Revolution”?


4.  What is separatism?


5.  What was the outcome of the 1995 referendum? Use the Internet or library resources to research its current status. Is the issue still alive? Write a paragraph summarizing your findings. Be sure to note the sources where you found your information.
