"The Gutiérrez-Magee Expedition"

Introduction
What do Philip Nolan, Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara, Augustus Magee, Samuel Kemper, and James Long have in common? They all invaded Texas in the early 1800s, hoping to free it from Spanish rule. Chapter 6 introduces you to the filibusters who set the stage for Texas independence. In this activity, you will learn more about the men who organized the Gutiérrez-Magee expedition.

4.  What event caused many Americans to leave the expedition before the final Battle of Medina?


5.  Kemper's army picked up volunteers and even deserters from the Spanish army as it made its way toward San Antonio. Imagine that you are a teenage boy living along the route that Kemper's army followed. Would you have joined the troops in the hope that you could help Mexico become free from Spanish rule? Why or why not? Using standard grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation, write your thoughts in a journal entry.
