Chapter 8: Growing Tensions
"The Fredonian Revolt"

Introduction
In your American history class, you learned about the Pilgrims and Puritans and other European colonists settling along the Atlantic coast in the thirteen colonies. Far from Great Britain across the ocean, the colonists began to think of themselves as Americans and not as British. A similar thing happened in Texas. Some of the Texas settlers, far from Mexico City, began to think about independence. In this activity, you will read about the first attempt to declare independence from Mexico.

Start at the Handbook of Texas Online Web site.

  • Scroll down and click on F under "Alphabetical Listing of Articles."
  • Scroll down until you see "Fredonian Rebellion." Click on it.
  • Read the information given.

After you read the information, answer the following questions.

1.  Where was Haden Edwards's land grant located? How many families was he allowed to bring into his colony?


2.  What happened in mid-1826? What was Haden Edwards's reaction?


3.  What did Edwards do when he learned that Mexican troops were ordered to his colony?


4.  What happened to Haden Edwards when the Mexican troops, militia, and members of Stephen F. Austin's colony reached Nacogdoches?


5.  The Web article describes the flag that was flown over the Old Stone Fort in the Fredonian Rebellion. On a separate sheet of paper, design a flag of your own to reflect your interests or beliefs. Make sure you are able to explain what the colors, patterns, symbols, and words on your flag mean.
