The life of Gandhi closely parallels the history of the movement for Indian independence. In this activity you will learn about the evolution of Gandhi's ideas, Gandhi's actions as a practitioner of nonviolence, and his achievements as a leader of the Indian independence movement.

  • Read the main article about the life of Gandhi, taking notes as you read. Make sure you read each of the five pages.
  • Click on the links on the right side of the screen to learn more.

After you have read the material, answer the following questions.



1.  What is satyagraha?


2.  What was the noncooperation movement? How did the movement end?


3.  What was Gandhi's position on separate electorates?


4.  What was Rabindranath Tagore's attitude toward Gandhi?


5.  Click on and read Father of the Nation. On a separate piece of paper, write an analysis of the main points of the author, focusing on the situation of Indian women during Gandhi's time and how he tried to improve their status in Indian society.
