Chapter 25: The Depression and FDR
"Life During the Great Depression"

Introduction
In this chapter you read about the stock market crash and its effects on America. People lost their jobs, their money, and their homes. In this time of crisis many families drew closer together, while others broke apart. Many young people left their families to find work. President Roosevelt created programs to meet the needs of those who had lost so much. In this activity you will take a closer look at what life was like during the Great Depression.

Start at the Michigan Historical Museum System's Great Depression page.

Click on Relief in Sight and read the information presented.
Make sure to click on the links titled Then and Now: Prices and People remember the Great Depression.

After you have explored the site answer the following questions.

1. Why did some people at first refuse assistance? How did the Depression change that attitude?

2. What were Civilian Conservation Corps members given in exchange for their work?

3. List the prices of the following items during the Depression: sweater, doll, sewing machine, washing machine

4. What was a doctor's weekly wage?

5. Read at least one account from "People remember the Great Depression." Write the script for a short skit about life in the Great Depression. You may also want to talk with an elderly family member or neighbor who remembers the Depression to get some more ideas for your skit. If your skit has more than one character, have friends practice it with you. Perform your skit for the class.
