Introduction
In this chapter you have read about the Cold War—an era when the United States and Soviet Union pushed each other to the very brink of war. While the U.S. and Soviet Union never engaged each other directly in armed conflict, fighting did break out in several locations around the world. One of those was the Korean Peninsula. In this activity you will take a closer look at the important role women played in the war effort.

After reading the narrative answer the questions below.

1. When the war began how many women were in the armed services?

2. What kinds of jobs did women do during the Korean War?

3. What sorts of services did women in the military provide outside their regular work assignments?

4. What does MASH stand for? Describe the life of nurses serving in a MASH unit.

5. Pretend that you were a MASH nurse during the Korean War, or that you worked in a MASH hospital. Write at least five journal entries describing the work you do, the living conditions, and the situation of the war around you.
