Architect

Description of Responsibilities
Architects plan and design new buildings and changes in existing buildings. Their work must be well constructed, visually pleasing, and functional. They work with clients to analyze design ideas, building needs, and building codes. Architects may work on designing and creating drawings, proposing a building site, or examining a site that has already been chosen. They also assess building costs and materials for clients and work with building contractors and other building consultants. Architects determine the needed building materials and apply for building and other necessary permits. Then they work with contractors to ensure that the plans, budgets, and schedules are met.

Education, Training, and Professional Qualifications
Architects must receive a college degree in architecture. Certification from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) is also helpful. Useful experience includes drafting, design, building, and engineering work.

Other Considerations
Architects must have good visual and design skills. They also need some mathematical, planning, engineering, and computer skills. Architects must be responsive to client concerns and work as team players. Knowledge about the newest building materials is also helpful.
