Art Critic

Description of Responsibilities
Art critics write critical reviews of artwork after attending art exhibitions and other art shows. As they review the art, they consider factors such as theme, expression, and technique. Their critiques focus on how the techniques used by artists influence their work. They also judge how successful the artists are in using technique to express their themes. Art critiques often compare one artwork to others, relying on well-known pieces as standards. Art critics analyze artwork based on their personal knowledge, judgment, and experience. Their reviews are published in magazines, newspapers, books, Web sites, and any other media that may be read by people interested in buying and viewing art.

Education, Training, and Professional Qualifications
A college degree in art or art history is usually needed. Knowledge of art and experience in the field are also important.

Other Considerations
Art critics must be good observers and have strong writing skills.
