Fabric Designer

Description of Responsibilities
Fabric designers determine the patterns, colors, and textures of fabrics. They design clothing, curtains, wallpaper, shower curtains, towels, and linens, to name a few. Fabric designers may work independently-contracting their services out to different manufacturers and designers-or they may be employed by a single manufacturing or design company.

Education, Training, and Professional Qualifications
Fabric designers need to know about fashion and design. A degree in fashion design or training in clothing manufacturing is recommended.

Other Considerations
Fabric designers who are skilled in sewing and making clothing have an advantage, because they understand what materials will work best with a particular design.
