Illustrator

Description of Responsibilities
Illustrators create visual images to clarify or decorate a text. Their work can be seen in books, magazines, advertisements, posters, television, film, and Web sites. Illustrations are usually created for advertising, editorial, informational, and educational purposes. Illustrators work with their clients when planning the design and layout of their drawings. They are often self-employed, contracting their services with clients on a project-to-project basis.

Education, Training, and Professional Qualifications
Although no specific degrees are required, liberal arts subjects such as art and language are useful. Formal art training, including undergraduate degrees or postgraduate work in fine arts or design, is recommended.

Other Considerations
Illustrators need to understand the different art media in which they work. They should be dedicated and self-motivated. They also need skills in researching, organization, planning, and time management.
