Interior Designer
Description of Responsibilities
Interior designers plan the design and decoration of the interior spaces in homes and offices. They find creative ways to make the spaces in these buildings both useful and pleasant. Interior designers work closely with their clients in preparing drawings, providing furnishings, and fixing lighting and finishes. Some interior designers specialize in residential design, while others focus on business design. And some specialize on a particular room, such as kitchens or bathrooms.
Education, Training, and Professional
Qualifications
Most companies require their designers to have a diploma in interior design. Interior designers are regulated by the government in 19 states and the District of Columbia. To become licensed in these states, interior designers must pass the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Exam. Licensed interior designers must also complete at least two years of college education in design, and they must have at least two years of experience working in the field, plus additional education or experience that equals a total of six years.
Other Considerations
Interior designers must meet federal, state, and local laws, including building codes. Designs for public areas must meet accessibility standards for the disabled and elderly. In a state that does not require licensing, membership in a professional association helps indicate an interior designer's qualifications.
