Museum Curator

Description of Responsibilities
Museum curators oversee the operations of museums. They are responsible for organizing, planning, and managing the museums' collections as well as recommending works that fit in with the museums' theme or focus. In addition, curators plan and manage educational and public-outreach programs, including tours, workshops, lectures, and classes. They also oversee and coordinate exhibits.

Education, Training, and Professional Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in art history is required. Graduate school and related work experience are usually needed. Museums require a master's degree in the discipline of their specialty-such as art, history, or archeology. Many employers want curators to have a doctorate. Having a degree in museum studies or museology, plus a specialized degree, helps people find jobs in this competitive field.

Other Considerations
The position requires some administrative work (especially in small museums), so courses in business administration, public relations, and marketing are helpful.
