Photographer

Description of Responsibilities
Photographers work in studios and on location to take pictures of people, places, products, and events. They meet with clients to discuss their needs, and they adapt their work to the clients' tastes. In setting up for a job, they visit the location, assess the setting and equipment needed, and plan with others working on the shoot, such as the make-up artists and directors. Photographers also prepare the camera and lights. When a shoot begins, they are responsible for placing all the objects in the photograph. During an informal shoot, such as a party, photographers must find photo opportunities. Photographers also develop and print photographs.

Education, Training, and Professional Qualifications
A degree in photography is helpful. A good portfolio is essential to a successful career as a photographer. Photography classes, including visual and fine arts courses, are recommended.

Other Considerations
Photographers must be observant and patient. They should know how to set up a picture to tell a story. Good hand-eye coordination and a good sense of color are also needed.
