Urban Planner

Description of Responsibilities
Urban planners determine the best ways to care for and improve city and neighborhood environments. Every city in the United States has at least one urban planner (or city planner), who helps control the growth and development of the city. Some areas that urban planners are responsible for include traffic, air pollution, and public transportation. They also determine the need for more schools, roads, and other public services. A good urban planner meets the community's needs while keeping it attractive and appealing.

Education, Training, and Professional Qualifications
Urban planners must have a bachelor's degree in urban planning. They should also have a master's degree in city planning or urban design. Planners who lack a master's degree but have a lot of experience are sometimes hired.

Other Considerations
Urban planners often use computers, and they write many reports. They also draw maps that show the changes needed for the future.
