Chapter 1: Ethics and the Law

Chapter Overview: Ready to Learn?
Ethics are the means for determining what a society’s values ought to be. Your personal ethics help you decide what is right or wrong. Because we don’t live in isolation, many of our decisions have an impact on others. While ethics tell us what to do, laws are needed because people don’t always do what they should. Law is the system of rules of conduct established by the government of a society to maintain stability and justice. In this chapter, you will begin to understand how the law is made. Understanding the relationship between the law and ethics will help you make decisions about your own legal and ethical responsibilities.
