MOTIVATE YOUR STUDENTS TO DEVELOP RESPONSIBLE EATING AND FITNESS HABITS.

Nutrition & Wellness is designed for foods and nutrition courses in grades 8-12. It can be targeted in several ways: for courses that emphasize nutrition and fitness; for foods and nutrition courses that place less emphasis on food preparation than traditional foods courses; or for an introductory high school foods course in a two-course sequence. It should be noted food preparation is thoroughly covered in the special Food Preparation Handbook at the back of the book. Many teachers find Nutrition & Wellness appealing for traditional foods and nutrition courses as well, because of its upbeat, student-friendly approach and its high-impact visual design. The text's positive approach emphasizes enjoyment of food and physical activity. Nutrition information is geared toward teens.

Features
  • Food Preparation Handbook at the back of the book presents concise, Illustrated how-tos for food safety, kitchen equipment, and food preparation skills. It also highlights food science and creative food preparation. Any of the five Handbook parts can be taught as a self-contained unit or used to supplement text chapters. Each part includes review questions and activities and is supported by a lesson plan and test in the Teacher Resource Guide.
  • TIME Global Nutrition & Wellness features, produced in partnership with Time Learning Ventures, provide informative mini-lessons on the food customs of six world regions. The features are found at the end of each unit and are supported by A Global Foods Tour, one of the booklets in the Student Motivation Kit.
  • Wellness in Action features highlight real-life teens who have promoted nutrition and wellness through projects at the school, community, state, or national level. Each feature includes a “Take Action” activity.
  • Careers features provide sample classified ads for occupations related to food and nutrition. Each feature includes a “Linking to the Workplace” activity.
  • Now You’re Cooking features provide quick and easy recipes with a skills focus. “More Ideas” variations and “Your Ideas” activities encourage creativity. The recipes are supported by the Foods Lab Activities booklet in the Student Motivation Kit.
  • Foods Lab activities at the end of each chapter provide simple hands-on activities to do in the school foods lab or in the home kitchen.
  • Wellness Challenge activities at the end of each chapter reinforce problem-solving skills.
  • Check This Out features and Tips features found throughout the chapters provide additional information on a variety of topics.
  • Do You Know questions at the beginning of each chapter spark students’ interest.
