A COMPREHENSIVE, RESEARCH-BASED CURRICULUM THAT ENGAGES STUDENTS AND BUILDS MATHEMATICAL UNDERSTANDING

Teachers asked for it and this new edition delivers it—new technology components and two expanded units in Course 1 covering decimals and fractions.

MathScape: Seeing and Thinking Mathematically was developed by Education Development Center, Inc. with funding from the National Science Foundation. It is one of the four middle school mathematics programs to receive a satisfactory rating from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Features
  • Twenty-one units sequenced over three years of study embed rigorous mathematics in engaging projects and investigations!
  • Available in hardcover editions or individual softcover modules, MathScape is flexible enough to meet the needs of any middle school classroom.
  • The program uses a combination of classroom strategies, group activities, cooperative learning situations, and homework.
  • All units are firmly grounded in problem solving, communication, reasoning, skills, and mathematical connections.
  • MathScape emphasizes mathematical thinking in addition to equations and problems. Students seek and describe patterns, represent situations in multiple ways, understand varying solution strategies, and generalize.
Teacher’s Guides
A separate Teacher’s Guide for each of the 21 units includes:

  • Detailed lesson plans
  • Reproductions of student pages
  • Mathematical background
  • Sample student work
  • Homework options
  • Tips from field-test teachers
  • A full range of assessment options
  • Reproducible pages for investigations

  • Each slim, well-organized guide contains all teacher materials needed to teach and assess the unit.

    Carefully Sequenced, Yet Flexible
MathScape’s twenty-one units are ordered in the suggested sequence shown in the chart below. While the developers carefully considered mathematical content development as they placed the units into grade levels and order, this suggested sequence is not the only way MathScape can be used.

Some teachers may choose to use the units in a different order or to move units from one grade level to another to accommodate district curriculum guidelines. They might also use MathScape along with favorite materials from other sources to create a program that is customized and truly unique.
