How do I connect to the Connect Online: Web Learning Adventures Web site?

Each activity tells you to "go to the Connect Online: Web Learning Adventures home page." This instruction assumes that you have followed whatever procedure your school uses to connect to the Internet. If your school server is always online, you'll be all set. If you have to log on first, you should follow your school's instructions to do that. The URL, or Web address, of the Connect Online: Web Learning Adventures home page is http://www.connectonline.glencoe.com. In Chapter 2, you'll learn how to create a shortcut to get there.

I can't make the tutorial work. What do I do?
The tutorials contain moving images. You need to have Flash installed on your computer in order to run the tutorials. To install the latest version of Flash, visit http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/.

Why doesn't the Back button work?

If the Back button in the tutorial is gray instead of orange, it is disabled. There may be an action you must perform on the screen (such as a quiz question to answer).

Otherwise, contact us and we will fix the problem as soon as possible. Be sure to tell us whether you are using the CD-ROM or the Web site.

Why doesn't the Next button work?
In the tutorial, there may be a Continue button on the screen. You should click Continue instead of Next.

Otherwise, contact us and we will fix the problem as soon as possible. Be sure to tell us whether you are using the CD-ROM or the Web site.

Why doesn't the sound work?
There is no sound.

If my CD-ROM won't work, how can I get a replacement?
Contact us, and we will send a new CD-ROM.

How do I make the text larger or smaller with my browser?.
If your browser is Internet Explorer version 5.0: To change the size of the text, click Tools in your browser's toolbar. At the Tools menu, open the General tab if it did not open automatically. On the General page, near the bottom, click on Accessibility. On the Accessibility page, click to add a checkmark to the box that says, "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages." Click OK on that page, and click OK on the General page. Now you can use the View button to change the size of text on Web pages.

If you have another browser or another version of Internet Explorer, the steps listed above may not work for you. In that case, check your Help files to learn how to change the size of the text on Web pages.

Why can't I make the links work on the Web pages I visit?
There are two kinds of Web pages in this program. One kind is not live, and one is.

The Web pages that are not live have been "frozen in time" and added to our site with the permission of their owners. Those frozen pages allow a student to practice using computer skills while protecting him or her from making any costly mistakes in the real world. With our program, students practice following links to clearly specified pages that we control. Therefore, if a link is not part of the lesson being taught, we have purposely disabled it.

This program does contain live links: in the "Go Online"features, in "Related Web Sites," in "Extend Yourself," and in all four activities in Chapter 12. If you have tried to follow a link that should be live and is not, please contact us, and we will fix the problem as soon as possible. Be sure to tell us whether you are using the CD-ROM or the Web site.

Why doesn't the Web page on my screen look like the photograph in the book?
Live Web sites change all the time. When we took the photograph of the Web page for the book, it looked different from its appearance now.

My student visited an inappropriate link while doing homework for this class. What should I do?
Live Web sites have live links that may change at any time. We worked very hard to make everything in our book, on our CD-ROM, and on our Web site appropriate for students to see. To do that, we disabled a great many links. However, in order to give students authentic experiences with the Internet, there are some situations that do have live links. They are as follows: in "Go Online," in "Related Web Sites," in "Extend Yourself," and in all four activities in Chapter 12. In those situations, students will visit live Web sites over which we have no control. We strongly recommend that teachers and parents preview any live Web sites before students see them to make sure the site is still appropriate for students to view.

If your student found an inappropriate live link that is NOT in "Go Online," in "Related Web Sites," in "Extend Yourself," or in Chapter 12, please contact us, and we will fix the problem as soon as possible. Be sure to tell us whether you are using the CD-ROM or the Web site.
