Stop Substance Abuse

Hands-On-Health

The health risks of tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs is shrouded in myth and misconception. No group is more victimized by these myths than teens. Because adolescence is a time of growth and self-discovery, some teens allow themselves to believe the lies and half-truths about these substances popularized by peers or the media. Some accept as true the totally false assertions that, for example, smoking and drinking make you appear more mature, or that steroids make you stronger and more athletic. In reality, tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs can--and do--kill. One behavior that is a sure sign of maturity is developing an awareness of and concern for the health and well-being of those around you.

Try This: Here is a chance for you and several classmates to demonstrate this type of awareness by spreading the word to others about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use through your own Web page. To get started, click on the button that prints out your worksheet. Next, arm yourselves with the facts, which can be found at the Web sites listed under Health Links. The last link provides basic instruction on the HTML programming language that you can use to prepare your Web page. Use the worksheet to help your group put its plan into action.
