Starting Up a Juice Bar

Hands-On-Health

Picture yourself opening the refrigerator after a fast-paced ball game or other vigorous activity. What do you reach for to quench your thirst? More and more people of all ages are answering that question with one word: "Juice." Besides having the ability to restore lost body fluids without creating the "afterthirst" associated with many soft drinks, a glass of fruit juice counts as one of the two to four servings of fruit per day health experts recommend. Juice can be served many ways, including blended with ice, whole fruit, and low-fat yogurt to create a refreshing smoothie.

Try This: Does your school have a juice bar? If it does not, here is an opportunity for you and several classmates to introduce a novel and healthful concept. To get under way, click the button that prints out your worksheet. Then explore some or all of the sites under Health Links below. These are aimed at individuals interested in opening a juice bar as an actual business opportunity, but they can help jump-start your group's effort by getting you to think about costs, recipes, and other essentials of running a juice bar. Use the information to help you complete the business plan on the worksheet.
