Hands-On-Health
When the first space probes were launched several
decades ago, observers back on earth were astonished to learn that the
crews were able to spot the Great Wall of China from space! To be sure,
we humans have left our mark on the planet in the great cities and architectural
wonders we have built. Unfortunately, the legacy of modern technology
has a dark side. This can be seen in acid rain, smog-choked air, contaminated
water, and other global ills stemming from waste and pollution. Although
efforts have been made worldwide to reverse these conditions, a lot
of work remains to be done if we are to rescue our planetary home for
future generations.

Saving
the planet is everyone's responsibility. Are you ready to answer the
call? If you are, begin by clicking on the button that prints out
your worksheet. Next, form an alliance with several classmates and
begin educating yourselves on key environmental issues by visiting
the sites listed below. Some of the sites include information about
programs and projects being undertaken at the community, national,
and international levels to protect the environment and maintain the
fragile balance of nature. For instance, you might find local chapters
at the Surfrider site. Use these ideas as a jumping-off point to help
you brainstorm an environmental problem either at home or abroad that
your team can work on. Once you have selected a problem, use the worksheet
to help you formulate a plan of action.
