Safety on Wheels

Hands-On-Health

Do you enjoy riding a bike? Maybe your favorite leisure-time activity is skateboarding, or possibly you're a fan of in-line skating. All of these can be healthful recreational activities because they make the heart and lungs work more efficiently. They can also lead to catastrophe, however, if they are practiced in an unsafe or careless manner. Each year an estimated 1.6 million injuries involving non-motor "vehicles" occur in this country. More than one thousand of these accidents result in death or permanent disability, which might have been prevented.

Try This: How savvy are you about safety on wheels? Here is a chance to sharpen your knowledge, as well as perform a service to others your own age. To get rolling, click on the button that will print out your worksheet. Then, working as part of a team of three students, visit the Web sites listed below under Health Links. Use the electronic booklets you find there as a jumping-off point to completing the worksheet activity.
