Health Quests

Safe in the Sun

Objectives

After completing this activity, students should be able to

  • identify harmful effects of the sun's rays on health.
  • discuss sun safety guidelines.
  • present a clear and focused public service announcement.

Motivator

Ask students: Do you think that most people are aware of the dangers of the sun's rays? Do they know how to protect themselves from sun overexposure? How might this information be effectively presented to the public? Why is this message so important? Have students discuss their answers as a group.

Suggestion

Ask for volunteers to present their public service announcements. Students may prefer to present either a video or audio recording of their announcements. Discuss them as a class. What was the message behind the public service announcements? Were the announcements appropriate for parents of young children? Why or why not? Do you think that the announcements would increase awareness of sun safety issues? Which public service announcements were the most memorable? Why?
