Unit 2 Keeping Your Body Healthy
Chapter 3, Lesson 2
E-skeletons
Projects
Examine pictures of real human bones and view joints from
different angles. After studying some of the main bones and
joints of the body, use the glossary feature to study terms
and view animations of bones and joints in motion.
Chapter 3, Lesson 3
My
Body
Pick a body part and present the information you learn about
it to your fellow students in class. To make your presentation
more interesting, think of a visual or an interactive activity
that would demonstrate that organ’s function. For example,
a pair of sponges can represent the kidneys. Can you think
of other household appliances that could represent the functions
of your body?
Cut
to the Heart
Place your hands on a flat surface in front of you with the
palms up and count how many times you can open and close your
hand in one minute. How many times could you do it? Did your
hands get tired? Even at rest, your heart works twice as hard
as the leg muscles of a sprinter. Study an animated map of
the heart and learn how the heart moves blood to supply your
whole body with oxygen. Explore the pictures of diseased hearts
and learn how surgeons treat heart disease.
Chapter 3, Lesson 4
Bodies
in Motion, Minds at Rest
Learn what you can do to get in good shape and stay that way.
Set some reasonable goals for yourself. For example, you might
try to do more sit-ups, run longer, or lift more weights by
the end of the month. Challenge yourself to achieve your goals.
Chapter 4, Lesson 1
USDA:
Nutrient Data Laboratory
Search the USDA database for nutritional information of one
of your favorite foods. Keep a diary of everything you eat
for a day and then calculate your day’s nutritional intake
using this database. Are there ways you can improve your diet?
Nutrition,
Fruits, and Vegetables
Do you know what phytochemicals are? They are active ingredients
found in fruits and vegetables that help your body fight off
disease. From this Web site, click on “Fruit and Vegetable
Info.” Choose five fruits or vegetables and, using information
contained on this site, write a report explaining how they
help your body.
Nutrition
Café
Tracking down the unhealthy culprits in a diet takes a good
understanding of nutritional concepts and, of course, some
solid detective work. Become a nutrition sleuth and find the
missing nutrients in each of the case files on this site.
Can you find them all?
Chapter 4, Lesson 2
Understanding
the Food Guide Pyramid
By now, you probably know the Food Guide Pyramid by heart.
But do you know what actually counts as a serving in each
of the six groups? Write down what you eat for a day and calculate
how many servings you consume of each food group. Do you stay
within the limits set by the pyramid? If not, what can you
change about your eating habits?
Chapter 4, Lesson 4

Your
Gross and Cool Body

They are both by-products of your body’s natural functions.

body’s sense of smell. Share some of the facts you find here
with classmates in a short report.
Chapter 5, Lesson 1

Does chocolate really cause breakouts? Does sunlight really
help clear acne? This site dispels common myths and misconceptions
about acne and offers advice on treating this common skin
problem. Read the facts and myths about acne and list the
four basic causes of acne and four ways to treat it.
Healthy
Teeth
You probably already know the basics of tooth care: brushing
and flossing. But do you know what really causes cavities
and why it’s so important to keep your teeth healthy? Make
a list of ways you can prevent cavities from ever forming.
For fun, also try one of the experiments listed under “Experiments
and Activities.”
Chapter 5, Lesson 2
What
Do You See?
Have your eyes ever played a trick on you? Those “tricks”
are actually optical illusions. Visit this Web site to view
a large selection of optical illusions. What do you see as
you look at each picture? Are you able to view the image in
more than one way? Print these pictures and show them to family
and friends to find out what they see. Explore the rest of
this site to learn more fun facts about the sense of sight.
