The Five Senses: Keeping Us Healthy

Objectives

After completing this activity, students should be able to

  • identify the five senses and describe their functions.
  • provide examples of each of the five senses.
  • prepare a bulletin board about one of the senses for elementary school children.

Motivator

Ask students: Which of your five senses-sight, hearing, taste, touch, or smell-do you think is the most important? Why? If you had to live without one of your senses, which one would you choose? Why? How could each of your senses cause you pleasure? How could each of your senses cause you pain? Have students discuss their answers as a group.

Suggestion

Ask for volunteers to share their bulletin boards with the class. What types of design elements were used? Were they effective? Was the design too cluttered or busy? Does the bulletin board catch your attention? Would it appeal to elementary school children? What changes could be made if the bulletin board were going to be displayed in a middle school classroom?
