Health Quests

Teaching Others About Substance Use and Abuse

Objectives

After completing this activity, students should be able to

  • identify the harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs on the body.
  • provide tips for avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.
  • demonstrate appropriate use of refusal skills to stay substance free.

Motivator

Ask students: Why might some teens start using tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs? (Possible answers: peer pressure, boredom, curiosity, rebellion, depression.) What are some ways to refuse these substances? What are some healthy alternatives to using them? Have students discuss their answers in small groups.

Suggestion

Have volunteers perform their role-play or skit for the class. Ask the students in the audience whether the performance was successful in achieving its goals. Was the message strong and clear? Were important facts presented in an interesting or entertaining way? How might the role-play or skit be improved?
