Volunteering: A Way to Help

Objectives

After completing this activity, students should be able to

  • specify a need or problem in the community.
  • identify community organizations that recruit volunteers.
  • devise a plan for volunteering to help with that need or problem.

Motivator

Ask students: In what ways do volunteers benefit from volunteering? How does volunteering make the volunteers feel? In what ways does volunteering benefit the community as a whole? Why do you think more people don't volunteer their time? What might be some ways to encourage people to volunteer? Have students discuss their answers as a group.

Suggestion

Have students hang their posters in the classroom, and allow time for them to examine one another's work. As a class, discuss the posters. Do they identify important community issues? Are the names and locations of local volunteer organizations included? What is the message behind the posters? Do you think they would motivate people to volunteer?
