A Mental Health Barometer

Hands-On-Health

When there is a problem to be solved, some people speak of putting on a "thinking cap." This image suggests that thought is something that takes place only when we consciously will it to happen. In reality, our brains are never at rest, even when we are asleep. Yet, how efficiently you use your brain as a tool in problem solving is another story. Do you make the most of your thinking faculties when faced with a problem? Do you have the stick-to-it-iveness to seek creative solutions?

Try This: You are probably aware that you can develop your heart and other muscles to improve your physical health. Did you know that you can develop your brain as a way of improving your mental health? This activity will give you a chance to flex your powers of thought. First, click on the button that will print out your worksheet. Then go to one of the Web sites listed below under Health Links. Work patiently to solve as many of the brainteasers as you can in 15 minutes. Check your answers as you go, and keep your score in the tally box by means of hash marks Finally, complete the rest of the worksheet.
