Interactive Projects
Overview In this activity, students will visit a Web site containing an interactive quiz on myths and facts of eye care. Students will first take the quiz, paying careful attention to the explanatory text that accompanies answers. Using the information provided in this text and in hotlinks within the text and elsewhere on the site, students will create a public service announcement (PSA) on the importance of eye care and safety.
Objectives
- To learn the realities of proper eye care, safety, and treatment by visiting a Web site dedicated to the care of this essential organ.
- To share information about eye care with the community at large.
Getting Started Explain that as medical research increases our knowledge, ideas once believed to be firmly grounded in fact are often discarded in favor of new ones. Note that one area of health that has undergone much revision in recent years, thanks to medical advances, is care of the eyes. Tell students they are about to take a quiz that explodes certain myths about eye care, safety, and treatment. Caution them that some of the answers to the true-false statements that they will encounter may surprise them.
Classroom Follow-up Allow time for students to share their PSAs in class. Volunteers might be asked to return to the site to explore one of the following linkable topics under the "Safety and Prevention" link: "Computers and Eye Strain," "Eye Injury Prevention in Sports," "Sunglasses, Ocular Hazards of UV Exposure." Invite students to share their findings in a multimedia presentation that uses original or downloaded illustrations, sound files, and other media to support the messages.
