The Victorian Web
Read the biography of Alfred, Lord Tennyson and trace his career from a young writer to Poet Laureate. Tennyson was unable to write his poetry on paper due to severe visual difficulties. Instead, he would craft his verses in his head and then dictate them to a helpful friend. Write a poem in your head and then dictate it to a classmate. After you have both dictated a poem, discuss with your partner the effect that this method of writing had on your finished work.

Five Stages of Grief - Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
Tennyson's poem "In Memoriam A. H. H." was inspired by the death of his dearest friend, Arthur Hallam. In the poem, the speaker moves through many different stages of mourning. Visit this Web page to learn what world-renowned psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross had to say over 100 years later about the different stages of grief. As a class, discuss which "stage" the speaker is in for each section of the poem in your textbook.
