The Gettysburg Address
by Abraham Lincoln

The Gettysburg Address
This online exhibit sponsored by the Library of Congress gives background information on Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. After reading Drafts of the Gettysburg Address, map or outline the reasons for and against adopting the Nicolay manuscript as the "reading" copy of Lincoln’s speech. Then, with a partner or a small group, discuss which copy, the Nicolay or the Hay, you think Lincoln would have wanted to preserve for posterity.

Response to a Serenade
The speech provided on this site is said to have been a forerunner of the Gettysburg Address. After you read the speech, make a chart in the Web Links Activity Log to compare and contrast it with the Gettysburg Address. Be sure to include your opinion of the two.
