Academy of Achievement: Elie Wiesel
You'll
find an interview along with photos and video and audio
clips of Elie Wiesel on this site. The author says here that
he wrote about his experiences in a concentration camp
"for other survivors who found it difficult to speak."
Ponder this statement and discuss with a group of
classmates why it is important to hear the stories of
Holocaust survivors, yet why it might be difficult
for some to speak out.
Visas
for Life
Chiune
"Sempo" Sugihara was the Japanese Consul General
in Kovno, Lithuania, in 1939 and 1940. Visit this
virtual exhibit from the Simon Wiesenthal Center
to read about how Sugihara courageously issued visas
that saved the lives of approximately 6,000 Polish
Jews. With a partner, design a "Chiune Sugihara
Humanitarian Award" to be given to people who risk
life and reputation to help others. Consider whether
the award should take the form of a statuette, a plaque,
a medal, or some other form.
