from Never Cry Wolf

by Farley Mowat

Farley Mowat
Read about Canadian author Farley Mowat at this Canada Reads Web site. The site notes that Never Cry Wolf "changed the way people thought about wolves. Instead of being feared, wolves were now seen as positive symbols of the wilderness." Did reading the excerpt in your textbook change your opinion of wolves? Did it educate you? Explain your answer in the Web Links Activity Log.

Wild Wolves
Go to this PBS/Nova site to learn how wolves communicate and to hear their eerie howls. As the site indicates, wolves may bark and whimper, but it is their howl that keeps the pack together. Can you think of calls humans use that may be similar to the howls described here? Discuss this question with your classmates. You may also use this site as a resource for the Interdisciplinary Activity in your textbook.
