The Kennedy Center’s African Odyssey Interactive: Mali—Africa’s Empire of Empires
This site provides background information on ancient Mali and the legend of Sundiata. Review The Legend of Sundiata, then click on What Is a Griot and compile a short list of facts about griots. Test out the storytelling tradition by whispering your list in a classmate’s ear. Have the classmate whisper the information to a third classmate. Continue this process as long as you wish. Then have the last student present what he or she has heard to the entire class. Did the information change as it passed from student to student? What does this tell you about the oral storytelling tradition? Discuss the results with your class.
