American
Slave Narratives
This site provides first-hand accounts from formerly
enslaved persons from the American South. Their tales of life
on plantations, in cities, and on small farms offer a comprehensive
overview of slavery in North America. Learn about family life,
religious beliefs, resistance, labor, and other aspects of
life as an enslaved person. You may use this site as a resource
for the Interdisciplinary Activity in your textbook.
Juneteenth
Pictorial: The Middle Passage
Begun in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, Juneteenth
is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery.
This site "is dedicated to this celebration and to those
who tirelessly contribute to its continued existence and growth."
Here you will find selections from artist Tom Feelings’s book
The Middle Passage, a work that chronicles the journey
of enslaved Africans from their homeland to the Americas.
Write a poem that captures your response to one of these moving
works of art.
