Whirling
Dervishes
Rumi's followers, the Sufis, are known for performing a sema
dance ritual. In English, the participants are called Whirling
Dervishes. Scroll through this photographic tour of a sema
ceremony, in which the Dervishes are said to lose themselves
in mystical union with Allah. Do you think these photographs
communicate something mystical? Is it possible for pictures
to convey something spiritual? Discuss these questions with
your class.
