Discarded Denominators

Copy onto cards the fractions shown below, one fraction per card. shuffle the cards and place them face down in a pile. Decide which group member will go first.

Each group member takes eight cards. One group member places one of the cards from his or her hand face up. In turn, each of the other group members must then place a card face up--if possible, a card containing a fraction with the same denominator as the fraction on the first group member's card. To take all four of the discarded cards, you must have discarded the card containing the greatest fraction with the same denominator as the fraction on the first group member's card.

Continue in the same way, taking turns going first, until no group member is holding any cards. Add all the fractions with like denominators on the cards you won. Try to have the greatest sum for thirds, fourth, fifths, and sevenths.
